Free fully functional Screen Reader & Braille Display Support

While you're average PC consumer takes their equipment out of the box, gets setup and off and going with little or no additional cost (except maybe for Virus protection) people who require Screen Reading software were left to either seek financial assistance for the purchase of a commercial grade screen reader (such as Jaws) or were left floundering with useable but poorly executed in-built options *such as Via Voice and Voice Over).

While this sort of issue is rampant among people requiring any form of accessibility adjustment, at least some of these problems are slowly being releived.

Enter Non Visual Access (NV Access)..

NV Access currently taps into the idea of Open Source Software which is more common in domains such as Linux where the emphasis is on Free.  Some of the well known applications that have come out of this are Open Office.org(a free alternative to MS Office) and GIMP (a free graphics editing utility).

NV Access has produced the Non Visual Desktop Acess program which is a fully featured screen reader and its free.  Non Visual Desktop Access also provides full compatibility with Braille displays.  While I cannot vouch for the software itself (being deaf and not a braille user it is of no use to me) I would like to congratulate NVA on its efforts and lend my support in their continued progress with the application.  It is always good to see accessibility software being taken seriously and that a need for a free or cheap alternative is being met.
